The fall of the Holy Ydoran Empire in particular is reminiscent of the French legend of Ys. The Golden Age of Ivalice is based on various ancient Mediterranean cultures such as Turkey, Jordan and Late Period Egypt, with additional influence from India, Sri Lanka and modern metropolitan cities, while its post- Cataclysm era-represented by Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story-is inspired by medieval and Renaissance-era Europe.

It first appeared in Final Fantasy Tactics, a spin-off entry to the series, and made its main series debut in Final Fantasy XII.
Unlike many other Final Fantasy worlds, most games set in Ivalice happen in the same universe, usually at different periods in time. Matsuno wanted to expand Ivalice across a number of different titles so that it would stay within the memories of players. Created by Director Yasumi Matsuno, Ivalice has been the setting of several games, including the non- Final Fantasy title, Vagrant Story.
